CALDERDALE: HEPTONSTALL, CRAGG ROAD, RISHWORTH MOOR

This was a long, hard and enjoyable walk in the snow and frost. On the whole, the weather was good, but changeable and very cold. It involved passing five reservoirs, going over the tops on the moors, but sticking to the Calderdale borough of West Yorkshire.

I set off from Mytholmroyd (which is just down from Hebden Bridge), went up the lower part of Crag Vale, veered off through the woods, then up onto the hills and moors.

I was looking down on the village of Heptonstall at first, then went toward Mankinholes and its wind turbines. Then down to White Holme Reservoir and Blackstone Edge Reservoir. This area is on the Lancashire border. (Blackstone Edge Reservoir is in the Rochdale district of Lancashire, but its immediate neighbour, White Holme Reservoir, is in Yorkshire.)

I then crossed Cragg Road and went onto another moor — Rishworth Moor. I traced that moor down to Booth Wood Reservoir, below the M62 motorway (which connects Yorkshire and Lancashire), and finally made my way to the village of Rishworth in the dark.
